“Mendenhall Women” Gathering
You are invited to come to a “Mendenhall Women” Gathering, which will honor Mary Mendenhall Wood and Mary Mendenhall Hobbs.
These two women lived in different centuries, but had many similar life goals and experiences. They both shared an uncle.
Mary Mendenhall Wood was a member of Merion Meeting and her son Scott will talk about her work and life.
Marge Dawson will talk about Mary Mendenhall Hobbs. MMH’s family worked hard to keep Guilford College going during the early days with the Civil War on the doorstep. She worked to help women to study and earn degrees having gone to school with M. Carey Thomas (later president of Bryn Mawr College). Mary Mendenhall Hobb’s husband was the first president of Guilford College. Her father, a doctor, was trained at Jefferson Hospital.
You are invited to come hear about the two, Mary Mendenhalls, and if you have memories or stories to share about them, we are looking forward to hearing them.
At our gathering we will have some Guilford Alumni as well as friends from the Lower Merion Historical Society and Merion Meeting. Refreshments will be served.
