Actress <a title=\"Taylor Williams of the American Historical Theatre\" href=\"http:\/\/ahtheatre.org\/america\/actor_historians\/names-j-through-z\/taylor-williams\" target=\"_blank\">Taylor Williams<\/a> recently portrayed her at Mt. Laurel Library&#8217;s <a title=\"A Portrayal of Alice Paul at Mt. Laurel Library\" href=\"http:\/\/articles.philly.com\/2013-03-23\/news\/37940290_1_shy-quaker-woman-alice-paul-hunger-strike\" target=\"_blank\"><em> A Portrayal of Alice Paul.<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Alice Stokes Paul Women's History\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nywici.org\/features\/blogs\/aloud\/womens-history-month-profile-alice-stokes-paul\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;As the daughter of Hicksite Quaker parents, Alice was raised to believe that men and women were equal, so you might say she was born a feminist,&#8221;<\/a> wrote <a title=\"Michele Hush, writer, NYWICI\" href=\"http:\/\/www.michelehush.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Michele Hush.<\/a>\u00a0 Paul was one of the protestors who repeatedly stood in silent protest outside the White House, urging President Wilson to support women&#8217;s suffrage. While some activists felt that passing an amendment to the US Constitution was an unrealistic goal, she set her sights high and worked for it with passion.<\/p>\n<p>She is known for her banner, &#8220;Mr. President, how long must women wait for liberty?&#8221;\u00a0 That question was answered with violent beatings, imprisonment, and force-feeding during a hunger strike. She made sure news of her treatment reached the media, and the outcry helped crystallize support for the 19th Amendment.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/news.merionfriends.org\/ProtestingPresidentWIlson_2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Alice Paul Institute\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alicepaul.org\/alicepaul.htm\" target=\"_blank\">The Alice Paul Institute<\/a> preserves the historical record of this remarkable woman, who died in 1977 at age 92.
